The Problem

  • Maternal mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and substance use disorder are the most prominent complications of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.

  • Perinatal depression is defined as depression occurring during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

  • 25% of pregnant women will develop perinatal depression. This number is higher for Latina women, doubles for African American women, and is even more prevalent for indigenous women.

  • Perinatal depression impacts both families and employers; it is both a clinical and economic problem.
